Origin Japan

Nutritional Aspects Matcha Green Tea comes from the same plant as black tea (and green tea). It is made from the nutrient-rich young leaves picked from the tips of the tea plant before being steamed, stemmed, and de-vined then stone-ground into very fine powder. A cup of green tea contains slightly less caffeine than black tea at ~35-70mg/cup. Green tea contains tannins which can prevent the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. In western cultures that have begun to use Matcha, ti is often brewed using milk, which will provide some fat, carbohydrates and protein. However, when brewed in the traditional Japanese method, with water, the macronutrient contipbution is negligible. Green tea (without added milk) contains polyphenols, antioxidants and flavanoids which are associated with many different health benefits. Matcha is essentially green tea, thus contains many of the same benefits. When consuming matcha, the whole leaf is consumed (as opposed to a steeped brew), thus it is thought that these benefits may be amplified to some extent. Green tea (brewed without milk) is high in phenolic compounds associated with the following effects: - very high antimicrobial activity - high antioxidant activity - may have a preventive effect on cardiovascular disease - may have a beneficial effect on blood lipid profiles (help hypercholesterolemia) - may help in the prevention and treatment of cancer - appears to have a thermogenic effect that may help with obesity - can be beneficial for glucose and lipid disorders - is associated with longevity. There have been almost no trials conducted using Matcha powder exclusively, with all the research having been conducted on regular brewed green tea where trials have been done in animals, with the available human studies being epidemiological or cohort studies.
