Nutritional Aspects English Breakfast Tea is a black tea base, containing caffeine (~50-80mg/cup) and tannins which can prevent the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. Black teas are fermented then dried. Brewed black tea (without added milk) contains negligible macronutrients, however, does offer several other trace compounds including polyphenols, antioxidants and flavanoids which are associated with many different health benefits. Black tea (brewed without milk) is high in phenolic compounds (16, 17) associated with the following effects: - antimicrobial activity (17, 18) (although not as high as green or rooibos tea) - antioxidant activity (17) (although not as high as green tea) - may have a preventive effect on cardiovascular disease (18, 19) - may have a beneficial effect on blood lipid profiles (help hypercholesterolemia) (19) - may help in the prevention and treatment of cancer (18, 19) - appears to have a thermogenic effect that may help with obesity (18) - can be beneficial for glucose and lipid disorders (18) - is associated with longevity (18) However the only controlled trials available have been conducted in animals, with the available human studies being epidemiological or cohort studies.
