The Journey to the Creation of The Produce Wholefood Pantry

The Journey to the Creation of The Produce Wholefood Pantry

It's an interesting process to reflect on your life and how you got to where you are at that particular moment. When I think about opening our store almost 3 years ago and my journey through that time I can’t help but reflect on my whole life's journey and the catalysts that triggered profound change in my life.

As a child I had terrible Psoriasis and Bronchitis. It was particularly challenging every winter with both conditions and my mum tried it all! Thankfully I grew out of the Bronchitis but the Psoriasis was more stubborn. I saw specialists tried the steroid creams and the tar based shampoos and they didn't seem to help. I was at my wits end in my early 20's when it was not only on my scalp it was creeping into my eyebrows! At that time I stumbled across a natural shampoo, not even realising at the time what it was, that helped. My eyebrows cleared up and then my hairline, it was still on my scalp but I thought that was just the way life would be for me.

Over the coming years I started avoiding more chemicals to see what happened, changing my washing powder to a natural brand and finding that my skin wasn't itchy all the time. Having those successes saw me spending more time in health food shops, learning about chemicals and the affect they had on my body. It wasn't until many years later that I started focusing on food.

I had issues with my digestion for as long as I could remember and I would get terrible pains in the stomach. I started cleaning up my diet just as I noticed things that didn't agree with me, sometimes there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason but I noticed what my body wanted and didn't and over time I have learnt that I am very sensitive to chemicals, additives, preservatives and I react quite harshly to them once they build up in my body. I used to see it as a bad thing, there must be something wrong with me! But now I know it's my internal warning system, if I eat something and get pain in my stomach then something in that food doesn't agree with me. Sadly our food is more modified that we know about and it can be really hard to tell what has made me sick, food journalling has helped me see patterns eg every time I eat at this place I feel unwell. I know for me reducing my animal product intake, increasing my fresh food intake, avoiding processed food, drinking plenty of water and moving my body make a big difference to how I feel both physically and mentally.

Your journey is your own and of course what works for me may not work for you, I encourage everyone to learn to listen to their body and find what works for you. It may take some time, it took me years and I'm still learning! So be patient and the little voice of your body telling you what it does and does not need will get stronger.

Much Love
